From Referral to RICS: Preparing for the APC

09 April 2025

At SRVO, we believe that surveyors aren’t just made through qualifications, they’re shaped through experience, mentorship and resilience. That ethos is personified by Regional Director Craig White, a Chartered Building Surveyor (MRICS), Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB), APC Assessor and Counsellor.

With over two decades of experience across social housing, complex residential and luxury refurbishment projects, Craig has built a reputation for trusted advice and high-impact delivery. But his path to chartership wasn’t without its challenges.

“I actually failed my Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) the first time. There were areas in my submission where when I was questioned, I couldn’t explain my reasoning clearly. It was tough, but it pushed me to reflect and review the referral report in depth, to be able to improve and come back stronger.”

That experience has shaped Craig’s approach to supporting future professionals. At SRVO, he now plays an active role in mentoring APC candidates, helping them to prepare not only technically, but mentally and emotionally for the assessment.

So, what does Craig think makes the difference when preparing for the APC?

“Firstly, you have to know your submission inside-out. The majority of questions asked during the assessment will be based on what you have written, so reviewing your documents regularly and thoroughly is essential, even down to the finer points of grammar and punctuation! Don’t assume it’s all in your head – go over it every day if you can.”

Craig also highlights the importance of mock interviews, not just one or two, but several, and ideally with different people.

“Mocks help reduce nerves. They put you under pressure in a controlled setting so you’re not thrown on the day. I had internal sessions with colleagues and external mock interviews through a swap setup with another firm – it made a real difference.”

Study groups also played a role in Craig’s journey.

“It’s amazing how much you can learn from others. Someone might raise a point you hadn’t considered, or you might end up debating an interpretation of a legislation, or a construction detail. Those conversations build your confidence and sharpen your judgement. Lean on your colleagues to discuss alternative points of view and keep each other accountable!”

When it comes to support, Craig is clear that choosing the right counsellor is key.

“It’s still your submission… You’re responsible for the content and the quality, but having a counsellor who’s engaged, who makes time for regular sessions and assessing your documents with constructive feedback, that can really elevate your preparation. I was lucky to have Graham Cardoe in my corner.”

And if things don’t go to plan?

“Don’t be disheartened. Use the referral report. It’s full of valuable insight. A failure isn’t the end, it’s simply part of your development. What matters is how you respond.”

Craig’s honest, grounded perspective speaks to SRVO’s wider values – integrity, collaboration and investing in people. As the business continues to grow, supporting the next generation of surveyors remains central to its mission.

“Ultimately,” Craig says, “you learn just as much from what goes wrong as from what goes right. The key is staying curious, asking for help, and being open to feedback. That’s how you grow, not just into a Chartered Surveyor, but into a better one.”
